Homosexuality in Ghana’s Media Space

What is the issue?

The ideology that “sex is sacred” has been well hammered into the skull of most Ghanaians by the older generation. Most people feel embarrassed to openly talk about sex or indulge in any conversation about sex. However, the rate of sexual infidelity, debauchery, prostitution, teenage pregnancy, fornication, and adultery in Ghana is on the rise.

The sorest spot or conversation no Ghanaian or most Ghanaians do not want to have is a topic of sexuality. This includes topics on gay, lesbianism, pansexual, asexual, and any form of sexuality that seems to be out of the "normal male and female" relations.

But here is the catch, in the last decade, Ghanaian hospitals have recorded an exponential increase in sexually transmitted diseases contracted through sodomy.

Of late rumors of homosexuality in the Ghanaian media, space has also been on the surge. But of course, most people who had been fingered with such allegations have publicly denied them.

Why is this issue worth discussing?

Ghanaian artists like Kofi Mole, Quamina MP, OV to mention a few have been linked to such rumors. These rumors stirred up national conversations on the matter. As some opined that these behaviors were unnatural and should not be encouraged, others thought it was their personal decision and was not up for public consumption.

In an interview with one of Ghana’s astute interviewer, Delay, these lingering stories were publicly discussed in the interview. All parties involved had their chance to approve to disprove these rumors.

Should peoples’ sexuality be up for discussion in the media space?
